1991 Opel Calibra C20XE 16v from Cyprus
Summary:
Despite its problems, I'll love it forever!
Faults:
The first thing to break on my Calibra was the radiator, which caused the car to overheat.
The engine then started to stutter, switching completely off regardless of temperature, and this took 4 years of a variety of mechanics working on the car to solve. We replaced head gasket, airflow meter, idle valve, spark plugs and air hoses, and the problem turned out to be a faulty fuel sensor.
The steering wheel column lost all steering fluid one day, which required the steering column to be replaced.
The thermostat was the next to go, and had to be replaced in order to allow the engine to warm up.
The gearbox is also showing early signs of wear, but this is to be expected, as the previous owner did not take very good care of it.
General Comments:
Despite all the problems, I would not consider selling my Calibra. Given that this car had been parked in a field for five years before I bought it, I think the expenses I put in it are justified.
She's a runner, gives torque in a broad spectrum of RPM, and accelerates very quickly without you ever realizing it!
The cornering wasn't all that great, until I added a strut bar and changed suspension to Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs with 45R17 tyres - now it's a dream. My only concern is that the low profile tyres absorb no shocks on the road, so I might switch to 16 inch and 50 profile, to preserve the car better.
On the road, it's very quiet and sleek, and definitely a head turner! I think it's one of the most beautiful coupes ever to go into production.
The back seats are surprisingly comfortable, even for some of my taller friends, and the boot is absolutely massive - given that this is essentially a streamlined coupe!
The steering is not great, but it's more responsive than other Opels and generally has a "sporty" feel about it.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
